Learn how to effectively use the Update Strategy to manage how often new content is fetched and how previously imported items are handled.
Contents

The Update strategy lets you decide how often to check for and import new items, as well as what happens to previously imported items when new content is fetched.

You can control whether or not the plugin should update the content of the already imported items and how often these updates occur.

Update Frequency

In this section, you can set how frequently the source should check for new items from the original site.

Update Every

This setting determines the interval at which the plugin checks for new content from the RSS feed. By default, the feed is set to update every 1 hour. However, you can change the number to increase or decrease the interval, such as 2 hours, 30 minutes, and so on.

By clicking on the unit beside the number, you can switch between the following time units:

  • Minutes
  • Hours
  • Days
  • Weeks
  • Months

Update Options

In addition to the update frequency, you can also choose whether or not to update the content of previously imported items according to the source’s feed.

Do Not Update Items

By choosing Do Not Update Items, any content imported from the source will stay the same in your site’s database. This means that after the first import, any changes made to the original source (like updates to titles, descriptions, or other content) will not be applied to the imported items.

When to use this option:

  • If you prefer to preserve the original state of the imported content as it was when first fetched.
  • If the feed content is unlikely to change after the initial import.
  • To avoid frequent content modifications on your site, which can affect SEO and user experience.

Keep Items Up-to-date

By selecting Keep Items Up-to-date, Aggregator will check the feed during every fetch to see if the content of any previously imported items has changed. If changes are detected, the content of those items will be modified accordingly. This option ensures that your imported items remain exactly in sync with the latest versions in the original source.

When to use this option:

  • If the feed content is frequently updated or revised.
  • If it is critical for your website to display the latest and most accurate version of the imported posts.
  • If you are aggregating news or time-sensitive information that may change after the initial publication.

Performance Impact

The Keep Items Up-to-Date option may result in slightly higher server load, depending on the size of the feed source and the frequency of updates. If you have a large number of imported items or are fetching content from multiple sources frequently, it’s advisable to monitor your site’s performance to ensure the feature is used optimally.

SEO Considerations

  • Do Not Update Items: This option can help maintain stable URLs and content, which is generally better for SEO. Since no modifications occur after the first import, when using the Feed to Post feature, search engines will index your imported posts once and not encounter frequent changes.
  • Keep Items Up-to-date: Frequent updates to existing content could trigger more frequent crawling by search engines, which can be beneficial for time-sensitive content. However, it may also result in fluctuations in how content is indexed if major changes happen frequently.

Choosing the right option depends on your specific use case and how you want the imported content to behave on your site.
